Creator platform development cost in 2026 models at $136,000 to $330,000 of typical market pricing for a custom web MVP with two integrations built by a senior US team, and $136,000 to $480,000 for an iPhone and Android MVP, according to Eltherion's software development cost calculator. Those are wider market numbers, not Eltherion's price: Eltherion projects start as low as $1,000.

Quick answer: In Eltherion's cost calculator, a custom creator web platform MVP with two integrations models at $136k to $330k of typical market pricing with a senior US team, or $61k to $149k with an offshore agency. Renting a platform costs far less upfront: Skool Pro is $99 a month with a 2.9% transaction fee, and Patreon takes 10%. Build when fees, branding or missing features start costing you real money.

Creator platform development cost by scope and team

The table shows what Eltherion's free cost calculator models for three common creator builds. An MVP (minimum viable product) is the smallest version your members can actually use. A v1 product is a fuller first release. Integrations are outside services the platform connects to, such as payments, email or video hosting. These are typical market prices, not quotes and not Eltherion's prices.

Typical market build cost for a creator platform, from Eltherion's cost calculator model
Creator platform buildSenior US teamMixed onshore/offshoreOffshore agency
Web MVP, 2 integrations$136k–$330k$95k–$231k$61k–$149k
iPhone and Android MVP, 2 integrations$136k–$480k$95k–$336k$61k–$216k
iPhone and Android v1, 3 integrations$204k–$720k$143k–$504k$92k–$324k

The build is only the first bill. The calculator plans for upkeep at 18% of the build cost per year, which works out to $24k to $59k a year for the senior US web MVP. Including upkeep and cloud hosting, that same web MVP models at $175k to $404k for year one. Starting on the web and adding mobile apps later keeps the first check smaller.

What makes a creator platform cost more?

Creator platforms look simple from the outside: a paywall, a feed and a member list. The cost hides in the features below, so decide which ones you truly need on day one.

  • Membership tiers and billing. Monthly and annual plans, free trials, upgrades, downgrades, coupons and failed-card recovery each add rules to build and test.
  • Community features. Posts, comments, direct messages, notifications and moderation tools are the backbone of a paid community, and they take real work to get right.
  • Video and live content. Course libraries, replays and live sessions depend on outside video services, and every outside service adds $8k to $15k in the calculator model.
  • Native mobile apps. iPhone and Android apps raise the calculator's top end from $330k to $480k at MVP scope, and to $720k at v1 scope with three integrations.
  • Several creators on one platform. Separate storefronts, revenue splits and creator payouts turn a single-creator site into a marketplace.
  • AI features. Search across your content or an assistant trained on your material adds $40k to $120k in the calculator model.

Should you use Patreon, Skool, Kajabi or Circle, or build your own?

If you're testing an idea or still growing your first few hundred paying members, rent. These platforms handle payments, hosting and updates for you. Here's what each one publishes on its official pricing page. Prices checked October 26, 2026.

  • Patreon. Patreon's pricing page lists a 10% fee on income earned on Patreon, plus payment processing, currency conversion and payout fees and applicable taxes. It's free to start, and you only pay when you earn.
  • Skool. Skool's pricing page lists Hobby at $9 a month with a 10% transaction fee, and Pro at $99 a month with a 2.9% transaction fee.
  • Kajabi. Kajabi's pricing page lists Basic at $179 a month, Growth at $249 and Pro at $499, or $143, $199 and $399 a month billed annually. Kajabi says it takes no revenue share, and Kajabi Payments card fees for US businesses run from 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic to 2.7% + $0.30 on Pro.
  • Circle. Circle's pricing page lists Professional at $89 a month, Business at $199 and Scale at $419 on annual billing, with transaction fees of 2%, 1% and 1%. Custom branded iPhone and Android apps come only with Circle Plus, which is custom priced with a 0.5% transaction fee.

Here's a worked example using those published prices. Say you have 2,500 members paying $20 a month, or $50,000 in monthly revenue. The figures below are platform and card fees only, calculated from each vendor's listed rates.

  • Patreon: a 10% fee is $5,000 a month, or $60,000 a year, before processing and payout fees.
  • Skool Pro: $99 plus a 2.9% transaction fee of $1,450 is $1,549 a month, about $18,600 a year.
  • Kajabi Pro, billed annually: $399 plus Kajabi Payments at 2.7% + $0.30 per charge ($1,350 + $750) is $2,499 a month.
  • Your own platform on Stripe: 2.9% + 30¢ per domestic card charge is $2,200 a month in processing, with no platform fee, but you also carry hosting and upkeep.

The honest takeaway: at this size, Skool or Kajabi costs far less per year than building and maintaining your own platform. Fees alone rarely justify a custom build. Owning your platform pays off when you need a branded app, features no template offers, several products under one login or full control of your member data, and when your revenue can carry the upkeep.

Rent the platform while you find your audience, and build when the platform starts deciding how your business works.

That's the path Eltherion knows firsthand. Founder Nick McCandless grew a creator-economy platform to 8-figure annual revenue, and the same experience shapes Eltherion's custom creator platform development for memberships, community and owned audiences.

What does a creator platform cost to run after launch?

Owning your platform swaps a platform fee for a set of smaller fees you control. These are the published numbers, checked October 26, 2026.

  • Card processing: Stripe's US pricing is 2.9% + 30¢ per successful domestic card charge, plus 1.5% for international cards and 1% when currency conversion is required.
  • Apple Developer Program: $99 a year to publish an iPhone app, per Apple's Developer Program page.
  • Google Play: a US$25 one-time registration fee, per Google Play Console Help.
  • Upkeep and hosting: the cost calculator plans for 18% of the build per year in upkeep, plus cloud hosting.

If you sell memberships inside an iPhone app through Apple's in-app purchase, Apple's commission matters most. Per Apple's subscription guidance, you receive 70% of the subscription price in a subscriber's first year and 85% after a year of paid service, minus taxes. The App Store Small Business Program offers a reduced 15% commission for developers with up to $1 million in proceeds.

In the worked example above, 70% means Apple keeps $15,000 of $50,000 in monthly in-app revenue, or $7,500 at the 15% rate. Plan how and where members pay before you design the app, because it changes your margins more than almost any feature. What should you ask a creator platform developer?

Ask every developer you talk to these questions. Good answers are specific and in writing.

  1. Who owns the code, the App Store and Google Play listings, and the member data when the project ends?
  2. How will members pay on the web, on iPhone and on Android, and what does each path cost in fees?
  3. How will you move my existing members over from Patreon, Skool or Kajabi without losing them?
  4. Which video, email and payment services will the platform rely on, and what do they cost each month?
  5. Is the price fixed for an agreed scope, and what happens when the scope changes?
  6. What does upkeep cost each year, and who fixes things when a payment or video service changes?

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to build a platform like Patreon or Skool?

In Eltherion's cost calculator, a custom creator web platform MVP with two integrations models at $136k to $330k of typical market pricing with a senior US team, $95k to $231k with a mixed team and $61k to $149k with an offshore agency. Adding iPhone and Android apps raises the senior US range to $136k to $480k.

Is it cheaper to stay on Patreon than build my own platform?

Usually, yes, until you're earning steadily. Patreon's 10% fee on $50,000 a month is $60,000 a year, which is real money, but lower-fee options like Skool Pro or Kajabi can close much of that gap first. A custom platform makes sense when you also need features, branding or data control those platforms can't give you.

Does Apple take a cut of creator memberships sold in an iPhone app?

When memberships are sold through Apple's in-app purchase, yes. Apple's subscription guidance says developers receive 70% of the price in a subscriber's first year and 85% after a year of paid service. The App Store Small Business Program offers a 15% commission for developers with up to $1 million in proceeds.

Should a creator platform start as a web app or a mobile app?

Most should start on the web. In Eltherion's cost calculator, a senior US web MVP tops out at $330k of typical market pricing versus $480k for an iPhone and Android MVP. A web platform also lets members pay through your own card processor. Add mobile apps once you know which features members use most.

What to do next

Add up what you paid in platform and transaction fees over the last twelve months, then list the features your members keep asking for that your platform can't deliver. If the list is short, stay where you are. If it's long and your fees keep climbing, it's time to price an owned platform.

Model your own feature mix in the cost calculator, then get a free estimate from Eltherion. Every project is scoped and priced up front, and Eltherion projects start as low as $1,000.
