AI chatbot development cost in 2026 models at $68k to $315k of typical market pricing for a custom chatbot MVP with one integration built by a senior US team, based on Eltherion's software development cost calculator. Eltherion projects start as low as $1,000, and the AI model bill to run a chatbot can be surprisingly small: about $220 a month for 5,000 conversations in the worked example below.
Quick answer: If you need a support bot that answers common questions from your help center, an off-the-shelf AI agent such as Intercom Fin, Zendesk AI agents or Tidio Lyro is usually the cheapest start. Build a custom chatbot when it must act inside your own systems, follow your own rules or keep per-conversation costs low at high volume. Eltherion projects start as low as $1,000.
How much does AI chatbot development cost?
The table shows three chatbot configurations from Eltherion's free cost calculator. These are models of what the wider market charges, not quotes and not Eltherion's prices. An integration is a connection to another system, such as Shopify, HubSpot, Salesforce or your booking software.
| Chatbot configuration | Senior US team | Mixed onshore/offshore | Offshore agency |
|---|---|---|---|
| MVP, 1 integration | $68k to $315k | $48k to $221k | $31k to $142k |
| MVP, 2 integrations | $76k to $330k | $53k to $231k | $34k to $149k |
| Full v1, 3 integrations, single sign-on | $129k to $525k | $90k to $368k | $58k to $236k |
An MVP is a first version that does one job well, such as answering customer questions on your website and creating a support ticket when it can't help. A v1 product is a fuller release with more channels, more polish and admin tools. In the calculator, v1 scope is 1.5 times the MVP base, and single sign-on (staff log in with existing company accounts) adds $15k to $30k.
The ranges are wide because chatbots vary so much. A bot that answers from 50 help articles is a very different project from one that looks up orders, issues refunds and books appointments. The calculator also assumes maintenance at 18% of the build cost per year, so plan for that from day one.
What makes a chatbot more expensive to build?
- Actions, not just answers. A bot that only answers questions is simpler than one that changes orders, books appointments or updates a CRM. Every action needs permissions, checks and a safe fallback.
- Each system it connects to. The calculator adds $8k to $15k of typical market cost per third-party integration, for example Shopify, HubSpot, Salesforce, Zendesk or a scheduling tool.
- Your knowledge base. Answering from your own documents means the bot looks up the right passage before replying. Messy, outdated or conflicting docs add cleanup time.
- Channels. Website chat is the starting point. Adding SMS, WhatsApp, email or voice means more testing and more edge cases.
- Human handoff. Passing a conversation to a person with the full history, at the right moment, takes careful design.
- Compliance. Health, finance and legal data need stricter controls and logs. A compliance program such as HIPAA or SOC 2 adds $25k to $60k in the calculator model.
- Testing and quality checks. Good teams build a set of real test questions and re-run them after every change so answers don't quietly get worse.
Should you buy an AI support chatbot instead of building one?
Often, yes. Here's what the main off-the-shelf AI support agents charge. Prices were checked October 26, 2026 on each vendor's official pricing page.
- Intercom Fin: $0.99 per Fin outcome, with a minimum monthly commitment, per Intercom's pricing page. Intercom's Essential seats are $29 per seat a month billed monthly or $19 billed annually, and Fin can also run on top of another helpdesk with no seats required.
- Zendesk AI agents: Zendesk's Suite Team plan is $55 per agent a month paid yearly or $69 monthly, and extra automated resolutions cost $1.50 each committed or $2.00 each pay-as-you-go, per Zendesk's pricing page.
- Tidio Lyro: the Lyro AI Agent starts at $32.50 a month for 50 Lyro AI conversations, with a 7-day free trial, per Tidio's pricing page.
Per-resolution pricing is simple at low volume. At Intercom's published $0.99 per outcome, 1,000 outcomes a month is $990. At Zendesk's pay-as-you-go rate of $2.00, 1,000 extra automated resolutions is $2,000. Those numbers grow in a straight line with your volume.
Buy when your bot mostly answers questions from a help center, you already use that vendor's helpdesk and your volume is modest. Build custom when the chatbot has to work inside your own software, when you need rules no vendor supports, or when you handle enough conversations that paying per resolution costs more than owning the system. Eltherion's custom AI chatbot and agent development team will tell you honestly which side of that line you're on.
